Here is a review for something I have not come across very much...a horror novel set in ancient Rome. The book is Roman Hell and it was written by Mark Mellon. The fact that it was set in ancient Rome was enough to peek my interest. That has always been an interesting period of history for me but I have never been able to learn as much about it as I could.

The book was a nice surprise for me. A lot of times when you find something that is set in an era you like or deals with a favorite topic the work can fall short of what you hoped it would be. That is not the case here.

Filled with well-written characters, both the good and the bad, Roman Hell was a very entertaining read. It has its heroes, some who readily accept the role, and others who have no choice, and it has its villains. The villains in this story were written so that there was no doubt in your mind that they enjoyed being the villain. To me that is my favorite kind, one who is bad because they are bad. No moral choices for them, and no struggles between right or wrong that we have to see them fight through.

As for the time period it was set in...Mellon has enough interesting little bits about Roman society to keep that part interesting as well. How society was then with its social classes, how people lived in certain parts of the city, and further insights on just how brutal a time it was. So if a tale of witchcraft, betrayal, action and suspense set in ancient Rome sounds interesting to you this might just be something you would want to read. The book sells on Amazon at $13.50 for a paperback copy and $5.60 for the kindle edition.
